Happy New Year to all! A New Year does not resolve itself to the resolutions we make or even the events that occur. Much of life is out of our control, and the only thing we can control is how we respond. Whether we are met with a pandemic, a slowing economy, or other events, all that matters is our response.
2022 was an exciting year in how we manage employees. It was the first time in decades that businesses were being faced with new changes in how we manage a workforce. I have had many conversations with businesses of all sizes, and it truly is a new challenge for many business owners to understand they must adapt to this new challenge or face the consequences.
2023 is ramping up to be a continuation of this trend, and we encourage you to truly understand, the things that we knew about workforce management have changed. Failure to adapt to these changes will create challenges for your business.
We are expecting several new regulations in 2023, which you will need to adapt to.
The first is the nationwide push for mandatory retirement programs. California, Oregon, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Washington have already instituted these policies.
Virginia is expected to go live around July of 2023, followed by New York, New Jersey, and Colorado.
This is being caused by the nationwide problem of individuals not being able to retire or have adequate savings. States are trying to get out in front of this problem before it becomes a national emergency. This will become a national requirement that businesses will have no choice but to implement.
The second major change is the State by State adoption of mandatory paid family leave. Many States have already adopted this, and we are now seeing it across the nation. Maryland will begin this program in late 2023.
